So we all know that in 2006 Time magazine made the excellent choice of making YOU the person of the year. This was due to your creation of your own media and news. For Writing your own content on blogs. For making your voice heard on podcasts. For putting your face on YouTube. For “working for nothing, and beating the pro’s at their own game”.
Then in 2007 the mainstream media and big-business stepped in to social-media with great success. We saw professionally produced viral videos kicking amateur’s butts; superb blogs originating from the media establishment; radio dj’s taking their shows to the internet for even bigger audiences… 2007 was their year, the year of THEM.
Now in 2008, we are starting to see a more integrated approach. Corporations are cashing in on your play-space, and YOU’re realizing the value and influence of your online hobbies. We’re seeing a lot more of YOU starting to engage directly with THEM for a share of that pie. THEY in-turn are more prepared to engage with your ideas, criticisms and creativity. YOU, in many cases will now work with THEM, and make a difference simply by communicating and networking across the organizational boundaries.
So perhaps in 2008 these boundaries between YOU and THEM will blur, and this year will be the year of US.

It’s interesting how social networks are starting to slow down in terms of people joining and how people are spending less time on them. I just posted a note about this on my blog. Damn advertising!
Uwe! Great to hear from you in LA! Yes, darn advertising getting in the way… I have a super-cool quote around this:
“Advertising is on its way to being obsolete. Facebook is just another step along the path. Advertising will get more and more targeted until it disappears, because perfectly targeted advertising is just information. And that’s good!” - David Winer
